Markdown viewer & editor for macOS

A quiet place to read and write Markdown.

Write the way you would at home, with no noise and nothing in a hurry. Mido turns any folder of notes, docs and READMEs into calm, beautifully typeset pages.

Free · Your files stay plain Markdown on your disk

⌘1

Read

Distraction-free, typeset pages with a navigable outline.

⌥⌘M

Comment

Select any sentence and start a thread, shared with your team through git.

⌘2

Split

Source and preview side by side, scrolling in sync as you type.

⌘3

Edit

A focused editor with Markdown and code highlighting.

Reading

Documents that look finished.

Tables, task lists, footnotes, GitHub-style alerts, math and syntax-highlighted code render the moment you open a file. Frontmatter becomes a tidy card, and relative links and images just work.

  • Outline panel that follows you as you scroll
  • Wrap long lines, or keep them intact and scroll sideways
  • Edits made in other apps appear instantly
  • An optional minimap, like VS Code's, in place of the scrollbar

Typography

Make every page yours.

Pick a reading style (Mido, GitHub, VS Code, Obsidian, Notion, Academic or Minimal), then fine-tune fonts, text size, line height and page width. Use the bundled fonts or any font installed on your computer.

  • Seven reading styles, from GitHub and VS Code to book-like serif
  • Separate fonts for body, headings and code
  • Justified text, frontmatter and wrapping on your terms

Comments

Review together, right in the repo.

Select any sentence and comment on it. Threads sit beside the text, with replies, resolve and reopen, signed with your git name. They're saved in a hidden .mido folder next to your documents, so a commit and a push share them with everyone.

  • A light dotted underline that shows the thread on hover
  • One file per comment: branches merge without conflicts
  • No accounts, no server: just files in your repository

Source control

Commit and push without leaving your docs.

In a git repository, Mido shows what changed since the last commit, as VS Code does: stage files one by one, read each change side by side in calm colours, write the message and commit, then sync with one button. Nothing happens on its own: Mido only does what you click.

  • Staged and unstaged changes, with the letter of each in the file tree
  • Side-by-side diffs that open in tabs, and conflicts you resolve in place
  • A commit dialog like IntelliJ's, with amend and sign-off
  • Branches, history graph, pull, push and sync, with your own git keys
  • And for anything else, a terminal under the document in your theme's colours: ⌃`

Mido Pro

Ask your documents.

Chat with Claude Code about what you're reading, in a panel beside it. Select a passage and have it explained, simplified or summarized. It reads the files you have open, the folder, or every folder open in Mido, and points you to where the answer comes from.

  • Notes and summaries written straight into your project
  • Changes to your documents only once you've seen the diff and allowed them
  • Several conversations, with their history; read any of them in a tab
  • Runs the Claude Code on your Mac, with your own Claude account

Keyboard first

Switch modes, tabs, the outline and settings without touching the mouse. ⌘B ⌘I ⌥⌘K while writing.

A toolbar for writing

In Edit and Split modes, headings, lists, tables, links, images, formulas and diagrams are a click away. Select text for bold and italic.

Export to Word

Send a document as a .docx with real headings, footnotes and equations. Your comments come along as Word comments.

Read the way you like

⌘+ and ⌘− resize the text, ⌘⇧+ and ⌘⇧− open up or tighten the lines.

Small and native

Built with Tauri and Rust: a ~5 MB download that starts fast and uses your system's web view.

Mido in Minimal Mode: only the folder's files, the open file's path and the document

Minimal Mode

View → Minimal Mode (⌃⌘M) leaves only the document, your files and Read · Split · Edit. Tabs, toolbars and panels step aside until you bring them back.

Quick search listing the lines that mention rendering across the folder's documents

Quick search

⌘P finds files by name and every line with the words you type, across the folder. Return opens it at that line; ⌘⇧F searches with more options.

Export and print

From the File menu: a standalone HTML page in your theme with its images inside, a Word document, or a print that saves as PDF, with no page break through code or tables.

Settings

Every option, one panel away.

Press ⌘, to open settings. Changes apply live, so you can see exactly how your pages will look before you close the panel.

Opening Mido the first time

Mido isn't code-signed by Apple yet, so macOS stops it the first time. Once, after installing:

  1. In Applications, right-click Mido, choose Open, then Open again.
  2. If macOS still won't open it: System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click Open Anyway.
  3. Or paste this in Terminal: xattr -cr /Applications/Mido.app

From then on, updates install from inside the app and don't ask again.

Just want to read? Open Mido in your browser: no install, read-only, and your files never leave your computer.

Windows and Linux versions are on the way.

Privacy

Your documents stay on your computer: Mido never uploads files, their names or contents. To learn how many people use it, the app sends anonymous statistics at most once a day (the version, the theme, and whether git and the terminal were used), under a random id and without storing IP addresses. Turn it off in Settings → Privacy. This site counts visits and downloads the same way, without cookies.

Support the work
